My friends at BLUR knew that there was only one mind perverse enough to tackle the end titles for the first R-rated comic book film of all time. And since Ryan Reynolds can't really draw, they went with me instead. We had too much fun with this sequence as I was entrusted with the bulk of the gags early on, later honing and refining them down to the five or so that made it into the final cut with the team at BLUR. It was a true team effort of insanely deranged folks, all set to the score of 'Lonely Whisperer,' which in and of itself makes the sequence sparkle. And shoot, really. Right out of a unicorn's horn.

CLAUS made it on SNL! This sequence was brought to us by our good buddies over at Visual Creatures. Pulling stills from behind-the-scenes prep footage, we focused our concept on the fast-paced production of the show and mixed in shots of New York to ground the sequence in the iconic city.

Logo Design for MARVEL’S Upcoming Film Franchise
Getting the opportunity to work on the upcoming reboot’s brand was a dream come true. I dove deep into the history of BLADE, starting with his first appearance in comics in Tomb of Dracula and continuing through to the most recent films. The concept I kept coming back to was having the type actually affected by a blade, having it cut in some way, and not having it ‘look’ like a blade, which a lot of the prior film logos perfected. Spacing the letters out a bit added to the sexiness and epic feel that I was hoping they’d vibe with, too. Thanks to my man Craig Hubbard at Mocean for taking it and bringing that 3D polish to it. Insanely cool to see it on the big screen at Comic Con and to have Mahershala Ali have it on his hat during the big announcement!

We were approached by our friends at REEL FX to take their second animated film's end title sequence from concept to completion during a two-month production schedule in 2014. Under the watchful eye of director, writer, 'Book of Life' creator Jorge Gutierrez and seasoned art director Paul J. Sullivan, CLAUS implemented the film's lush palette and refined character designs into a stylized, minimalist design aesthetic in order to adequately compliment the film in this two and a half minute animated end title sequence.

OVERWATCH FALL MARKETING CAMPAIGN

Love working with We Are Royale, especially when it’s on such massive brands that allow for creative awesomeness! I was called by the team at WAR at the beginning of the concept phase for Overwatch’s 2020 Fall Marketing Playoff Campaign brainstorming process. After listening to the brief and how the team at Overwatch wanted to evolve their previous year’s aesthetic and feel, I went into a deconstructed graphic/comic-book narrative that allowed us to feature the player and mascot of each Overwatch League team in such a way that championed the action while doubling down on the COOL. Halftone dot patterns brought us back into that graphic narrative vibe while Jack Kirby’s legendary KRACKLE boosted our designs to the next level. I grew up on comics and being able to draw characters in such dynamic hero poses for a worldwide video game phenomenon was truly EPIC. Thanks We Are Royale!

We were approached by Jenn Miller of Blur Studios to add an illustrative concept into their pitch for the end titles for the 2014 sequel to THOR. The concept was to be dark, moody, painterly, and kinetic, sticking to a monotone color palette with red accents for the main man's cape. After hearing that our style was chosen, I worked hand in hand with Blur and went on to paint over 65 digital, production-ready paintings in Photoshop, combining scanned brush strokes with original brushes over stills from the film. This remains one of my favorite projects of all time.

The amazingly cool folks at We Are Royale reached out to collaborate on the typography design and overall copy layout of the first spots for their incredible work for UNDER ARMOUR. The existing edit was kinetic and cutty, utilizing multiple split screen shots to echo the pacing of the piece, so instilling a strong foundation of typography to hit their copy points was a challenge early on. Once we started repeating type, cropping some off of the frame, and experimenting with the plus/minus signs, the piece came together for all involved! An absolute joy to work on and hopefully the first of many with We Are Royale!

END TITLE CONCEPT DESIGN (Pitch)
Getting a call to concept on the end title sequence of what was surely to become the highest grossing movie of all time doesn’t happen every day. Another thanks to our friends at Sarofsky for thinking of us as we plunged head first into the endeavor. Our idea was simple, celebrate the characters, actors, and make it for the fans. We added the signatures by each actor’s name to make it feel personalized and unique, almost like a ‘sign-off’ in a way. We went with a halftone dot pattern execution in many of the designs to harken back to the origins of these heroes in the comics, and we kept a gritty feel to make it feel like a notebook, the origins for each and every movie’s scripts. Even though MARVEL didn’t got with this direction, we were told that the directors, Joe and Anthony Russo referred to this direction as ‘visually arresting.’ Not bad!
